And the rains just keep coming.....
For those of us who are here in Puerto Vallarta at this time, we know that in the past 24 hours
especially,
we have been inundated with heavy rains. Many of us have leaks in our windows, roofs,
problems with muddy roads but we will be fine.
Unfortunately the "Albergue" (Shelter) for the Street Boys (New Life Mexico) is designed so that
to get from a dormitory to the bathroom, kitchen area or anywhere else, the boys get wet.
At this time, 34 boys are soaking wet, with no dry clothes (the old dryer just cannot keep up),
not one dry towel, and are soaked to the skin. (There is only one towel per boy).
At this time, we are in urgent need of:
Towels (used in good shape are fine!)
T-Shirts (boys 8 to 18 years)
Cough Medicine, both children's and adult (for the over 12 year olds)
Vitamin C chewable tablets
And as well
Boxers (men's medium size 32-34 - new only)
If you can donate any of the above, please contact me as soon as possible.
We will make arrangements for someone to pick up your donations.
Please think of these kids as we are comfortable in our dry homes!
Please consider assisting the Street Boys in our urgent plea!
Thank you!
Pamela Thompson

Update for you on the Friendship Club's recent activities as we continue to supply
medicine and pay for medical support for the needy of the North Bay area. HERE

The Zeta chapter of Beta Sigma Phi is made up of women from Bucerias and La Cruz. The sorority just
completed a project bringing a new playground to a local school. For the story and photos, see them here.

A report from the Friendship Club of LaCruz:  This month we paid for school supplies for
thirteen children in Bucerias. For some of them, this made the difference for whether they
were able to go back to school or not. We will be helping some La Cruz school children as well.
This has cost around 5,000 pesos so far, with more expenses expected this month.
We continue to pay travel expenses for 11-year-old Socorro and her mother for their trips to
Guadalajara where Socorro receives chemotherapy for leukemia. She is responding well, and
we are so happy to be able to help her. If you are interested in helping us with a financial
donation before you return to Mexico, you can send funds to our PayPal account. Log on to
Paypal, click "Send Money" and then fill out kdobek@hotmail on the "To" line. You do not have
to be a PayPal member to do this. Any amount will be appreciated and help keep us going
through the summer months. We are again requesting used eye glasses to hand out to the
townspeople of the area. Last year we were given so many, I stopped counting when I reached 600.
If you bring any, I will find people to give them to, so bring as many as you can. Also, Philo and
the Friendship Club are accepting used desk-top computers in working condition to give to the local
schools. This request may be easier for those of you already in Mexico, as Mexico restricts bringing
in desk-computers. If any of you can help, email me or Philo and we will help you figure out how to
do this.
A note from Valiene:  I heard of someone bringing down several used desktop computers with a
letter stating that they were inoperable and were being sent to Mexico for parts.  Each computer
had a card from a computer repair shop attached to it.  Good idea!

Aduato's Beach Club in Bucerias has closed at their original location.  They will be re-opening on Oct. 1st
at Av. Del Pacific # 11A, Bucerias. (formerly Capri, which is being remodeled).

I recently received a report from a US veterinarian stating that grapes and raisins may be
poisonous to your dogs.  The ASCPA National Animal Poison control said as few as 7 raisins
or grapes could be toxic. Many people I know give their dogs grapes or raisins as treats.
Any exposure should give rise to immediate concern.  Be careful what you give your animals

The U.S. Consular Agency Vallarta is moving on August 9th and 10th, from their provisional
quarters in Paradise Village to the Paradise Village Plaza Shopping Center, Paseo de los Cocoteros #85 – Sur,
Local # l – 7, Nuevo Vallarta, Nayarit,  C.P. 63732

The Consular Agency will be closed on those dates for non-emergency services.  Emergency services will be
provided uninterrupted.
All consular services will resume at the new permanent location as of Monday, August 13, 2007.
For more information, please contact the U.S. Consular Agency, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.,
Monday-Friday at 322-222-0069 or 322-223-3301 or email:  consularagentpvr@prodigy.net.mx

I have received this message from several people (in Spanish).  This is a basic translation:
Let's see how great it would be if everyone just shut down their electricity on Saturday, August 11
from 19:53 until 20:00 (7:53-8:00 p.m.) for only 7 minutes.  Let's do a little part to save the
polar bears that are drowning, and us as well.

Unfortunately, the program at the Bilingual Academy on Saturday has been cancelled.  A large percentage
of the children are leaving, or have left, for family vacations before they return to their regular school
on August 20th.  For those who are interested, the crafts the children have done will be on display at the
school at 12:30 on Friday, Aug. 3rd.  Depending on the number of children who attend school that day,
some of the programs will be performed.  The school staff is most apologetic about this but "stuff happens".

Homes needed:  Toby, approximately 6 years old, beautiful, large German Shepherd needs a loving home.
A fenced yard is required.  Toby is a good guard dog but is loving with friends and family.  For more info,
call Marge Antrim at 298-1435. At La Quinta, the new restaurant on Agustin Melgar, there are 3 kittens who need homes.
They are about 6-7 weeks old and they are all house trained. If you want to become a staff member
for a furry bundle of love, talk to Dave or Lydia.

A new bike shop has opened. Puerto Vallarta Choppers is located at Carretera Tepic #996, Nuevo Vallarta.
This is across the street from the Restaurant Marlin, at the light.  They do sales, service, repair, etc..
I am not a biker but they do have some outrageous bikes. They also offer a boutique of t-shirts and
other biker "stuff".

Salsa Mora is closing for the season.  Hikuri Gallery and Patio will be open until the end of the month.

Please call Esspressions to confirm the weekly selections,  298-0749 or check the board in front, which is updated
nightly for the following day.

UPS service is now in Bucerias at Jorge's gallery, Lazaro Cardenas 39. Items left there before noon will
arrive in the US or Canada within two days.

A new shop ' La Vida Bella' has opened in Punta de Mita, #3 Las Pangas next to Cafe Luna, just up 3 buildings
from the Tourist Co-op on the beach It will feature fine Mexican handcrafts, vintage Silver, kitchen and bath
supplies, Mayan bedspreads and gifts.

I understand there are a lot of cats, dogs, kittens, puppies in need of adoption, as usual.
If you would like a new four legged friend, contact Molly at mollyinmexico@yahoo.com.

Hola Everyone,

Philo here.

I'm back in Mexico and Philo's Bar, Restaurant and Music Studio will reopen today Thursday August 23rd at four o'clock.
Philo and the Mexican Shuffle Band will be playing and the music starts at 9pm.

Wow, wow, wow what a great time I had at the "2007 Gathering of the Tribe" event at the Caspar Inn,
in Caspar, California playing with all my old buddies.  I didn't count but I think I got over a hundred hugs
from all my old friends.  It's been seven years and everyone pretty much looks the same.
The place was packed and the music was great.  Over twenty musicians got to play and everyone was
grinning ear to ear.  After expenses we cleared $460.00 which we are donating to the Friendship Club here
in La Cruz.  The Friendship Club is an organization we started here at Philo's to help children and
adults from our village with medical expenses.  We have several on going projects, mainly buying
children medicines as well as providing medical care.  Thanks everyone.
The money we raised will be well spent.

I also collected about 50 new e-mail addresses from the event.  Soooo, I will be including my Philo's story again
this week to bring everyone up to date on my whereabouts for the last seven years.
I'll be putting it at the end of this weeks notes so everyone who has already read the story won't have to again.

My friend Kathleen was at the inauguration of the playground on
Tuesday for the first day of school, as was my musician friend Oscar.
Kathleen said the children on the playground approached controlled pandemonium.
The playground is the culmination of work done by all of us from inside and outside of APEARCH.
APEARCH is an organization we started to help clean and beautify our little village of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle.
The gift was made possible by our friends who live in the community of Real Del Mar.
Thanks again for pulling it together Margret.

Check out Oscar's "My Space" site.

We still need a new teacher for the Children's English class. Silvia has just let us know that she will not be returning,
although she said she could work 2-3 weeks until we find a new teacher.

As most of you already know Philo's is as much of a Community Center and Community School as it is a Bar,
Restaurant and Music Studio.   During the high part of the season when the Gringos are here we have classes
in Spanish, Music, Yoga and occasionally other assorted subjects.  Year around we have classes in English
for the Mexican community.  When we're going full blast we have 40 to 50 students for our English classes
and 4 or 5 teachers.  All the classes at Philo's are free.  Most of the teachers donate their time.
For the others we raise money for our classes through donations

I will be flying to the San Juan Islands in Washington next Wednesday to help deliver a sailboat to San Diego.
I should be returning here around the middle of Sept and will be back playing music on or around the
10th or 11th of September.
